Testimonial

"Having done some research on sustainable fishing methods, visiting the Opotiki Community Reef site was incredibly interesting. It is an excellent example of what can be done to ensure that fish populations thrive in the future."

Charter Boat Trips

Men and fish are alike,
they both get into trouble
when they open their mouths.

Local Opotiki Fishing
Fishing out from Opotiki boasts several quite unique fishing opportunities. Opotiki fishermen have learned to fish hard and fish fast.

The time spent at sea is often constrained. Opotiki has sand bar restrictions, meaning that even with good sea conditions it is best only to use the harbour entrance bar three hours either side of a high tide.
Even so, just a couple of hours fishing can be plenty of time to catch a good feed of fish.

Inshore and Community Reef

Worldwide, artificial reef fishing (locally known as seabed enhancement) is renown for producing more fishing action and more variety of action, which is why they are so popular with fish and fishermen alike.

The Opotiki Community reef is just a few kilometres out so your time spent fishing is maximised. We also like to think of this as perhaps the most ecologically advanced fishing opportunity in New Zealand. Read below more about 'Blue green fishing'

Local charter fishing trips work out at around $120 per person (Min 2, max 4). This price is includes rods, terminal tackle, bait and tuition as required.

Ocean aquaculture and Kingfish

The next great fishing opportunity is being provided by the new ocean aquaculture trail lines which are becoming an attractant for kingfish and a variety of other species.

Here you are welcomed to tie up to a buoy, hear something of this world leading aquaculture venture and see mussels growing.

Trips work out at around $150 per person. Specialised king fishing gear is provided but lures lost are chargeable.

White Island and East Cape

Then there's all the other spots even further afield in the Bay of Plenty, White Island, East Cape and more that experienced charter operators know well. Book through REAF Ltd and be assured of local knowledge that gets you safely to top action.

What to bring.
If you have your own fishing rods and gear then please bring it. Preferably shorter boat rods, local baits or soft baits.
Conditions on the ocean can be changeable so an extra layer of clothing and windbreaker is always advisable.
A chili bin- eski type container to take your fish away with you, but leave it in your car for use when we return with fish.

Please note that currently charter boat fishing is booked via REAF Ltd but contracted out to local charter operators.

Blue-green Fishing differences.

Blue-green is a term which in our vision embraces both green conservation values and modest resource use.

Blue-green Fishing is about harvesting fish that have been actively nurtured on our deployed reef sites.

Blue-green Fishing goal is to offer the most ecologically active fishing experience to be found in New Zealand, perhaps even globally.

Our foremost unique feature is that commonly you will be fishing for wild fish that REAF has actively helped to grow.

Globally artificial reefs are known for offering consistently more action, more fish, and greater species diversity. Our research shows we catch 30% more fish in the Community Reef site.

Blue-green fishing is focused on ensuring your fishing experience helps the environment and community.  We aspire to Green Globe 21 International  Eco tourism key principles and work off a check list to ensure all aspects are covered during the trip, be it on the water or land based.
