Testimonial

"Having done some research on sustainable fishing methods, visiting the Opotiki Community Reef site was incredibly interesting. It is an excellent example of what can be done to ensure that fish populations thrive in the future."

Local Services in Opotiki
- we don't have it all!

Food, Accommodation and Transport.

Opotiki is a smaller regional township that boasts most facilities that visitors might require but has no McDonalds, Subway nor KFC.
Opotiki Hot Bread Shop is just metres from REAF and is open early for breakfasts with good snack food and coffee available all day.
If you are arriving late in Opotiki the main New World Supermarket closes at 8pm.
The Hotels and Cafe in town serve quality evening meals.

There is a range of good quality accommodation available from BackPackers, Motels, Bed and Breakfasts and Hotels. The closest Motel, Eastland Pacific Motor Lodge, is just 200m away from REAF premises.

REAF has its own 'Opotiki Cottage' accommodation available very close to the Opotiki Wharf boat ramp and Community Reef. It has 2 bedrooms and can sleep up to 6 people for just $100 per night. For more details and photos go tour our Opotiki Cottage page.

Opotiki has no internal public transport nor taxi service, but the InterCity Bus stops off at the Hot Bread Shop. Most things are so close you can walk. REAF has good off street parking available and a clean toilet. You drive past magnificent sandy beaches as you come into Opotiki.

Opotiki is the gateway to the EASTLAND region and an excellent small illustrated guide book can be sent to you free of charge by the Opotiki Visitors Information Centre. Email the information Centre at infocentre@odc.govt.nz. and request a copy of the Opotiki and East Cape holiday guide.
If you are planning to travel onward from REAF Opotiki around the East Cape then the above publication is an essential.

Experience the awesome solitude of New Zealand's East Coast natural spaces with its strong Maori heritage. There are no high rise buildings along our beaches.

Probably the best localised web site that gives a brief history of Opotiki and lists all eating places, accommodation and events is to be found at www.opotikinz.com

Opotiki's logo is 'Opotiki Coast by Nature'. If you would like to view an excellent slide show (2.5MB PDF) of the area taken from helicopter by local Opotiki photographer Brian Young then go to www.linear-photographs.com

Lastly it seems that our high sunshine hours produce clear night skies. Consequently this part of the New Zealand gives one of the best night showings of stars in the Milky Way that you can see anywhere.

Maybe we do have it all.
