Testimonial

"Having done some research on sustainable fishing methods, visiting the Opotiki Community Reef site was incredibly interesting. It is an excellent example of what can be done to ensure that fish populations thrive in the future."

Memory Reefs

Leaving a legacy that makes a difference.

With fishing perhaps New Zealand's most popular recreational activity, it may be very fitting to remember loved ones with the building and dedication of a Memory Reef ©. In other places throughout the World they are often referred to as Memorial Reefs.

Memory Reefs can be personalised by placing the name of your loved one on all reef building modules, by adding a long lasting ceramic photo tile plaque and even with the inclusion of small personal items embedded inside a Time Pyramid.

Please note that Memory Reefs do not incorporate cremation ashes into its concrete as this would be considered culturally inappropriate in Aotearoa and contrary to marine enhancement efforts as we currently understand them.

Holding a boating dedication ceremony above a reef built in memory of a loved one is very appropriate.

What greater way of being remembered than having an entire marine reef, that continually grows new life, being dedicated to your loved one.
Your family can come together for fishing trips to your reef. Grandchildren will be encouraged to take an interest in marine life. Fishing stories will grow from your Memory Reef.
Far from being a static monument, a Memory Reef is a living entity.

All the standard prices listed on our Marine Life Credits page apply. If you are wanting to include some extra ideas then please contact REAF to discuss your needs and ask for a free itemised quote.

Families sponsoring a Memory Reef are additionally also eligible for

  • up to a weeks free accommodation at the Opotiki Cottage near the Opotiki Wharf and Boat Ramp
  • a free boat trip (can be a dedication service) to the Memory Reef deployment site
  • Personalised Memory Reef Certificates for family members.
