The REAF Day Tour should especially appeal to anyone with an interest in fishing and marine life generally, but also to those of you keen to explore possible solutions to environmental crisis that face the planet today.
The day with REAF starts with a World overview of historical and scientific knowledge relating to artificial reef building, looks at some examples of cultural environmental management practices, examines the role of ethics in conservation, and then connects these concepts to seabed enhancement.
After laying a theoretical background we take a short trip to visit a couple of connected sites and collect a few needed materials from a local beach. After a lunch its time to get really practical, roll up the sleeves and construct some seabed enhancement modules.
Seabed enhancement is differentiated from artificial reef building in many aspects. It is hoped that by the end of the day your appreciation of the differences will have grown.
Just as the weather changes every day, so too can a day with REAF vary a little according to personal preferences, seasons and tides.
Our agenda for the Day Tour looks like this:
- 9.00 am. Welcome and greetings.
- 9.10 A back-grounding presentation covering the history of reef building around the World and theory of seabed enhancement locally. This includes indigenous cultural practices and examples of Maori conservation ethics.
- 10.30 Morning tea
- 10.45 A short tour to related sites and collection of needed materials from a local beach..
- 12.00 Sharing in a luncheon.
- 12.30 Practical concrete enhancement module construction. All safety gear, briefing and guidance provided.
- 2.45 Recap and farewells.
- 3.00 Approximate finishing time.
Families can be catered for but the Day Tour is mostly suitable for thoughtful adults. All materials are supplied and you get to personalise the enhancement modules that you build. These go toward the Opotiki Community Reef being constructed (with your help).
REAF can cater for up to ten people at a time. The program can be run in most all weathers. REAF needs a minimum collective booking of 2 people to operate.
An all inclusive charge of $160 per head for adults and $120 for 8 to 16 year olds includes the following -
- All materials needed to build an enhancement module.
- Overalls, gloves and safety gear as needed.
- Snacks, morning tea and drinks.
- A shared luncheon.
- Transport.
- Tax and permit fees.
Sometimes last minute requests can work out but advanced planning and bookings avoid disappointments.
Please complete as much of the following as you can so that REAF can best meet your needs.
REAF will email you back confirming your request date and asking for a 25% non-refundable deposit paid into our Paymate (or PayPal) account to secure your booking.
Some people prefer to pay in advance for their whole REAF booking so as to minimise transactions. This is good and in the unlikely event of a cancellation or missed connection a 75% refund will be made.
Alternatively email us or phone us at 0064 07 3155831 or 027 350 4910 and speak with Lloyd.

REAF caters with a simple wholesome luncheon but if you wish to contribute something or prefer special foods then please feel free to bring your food along.
Sun block and a sun hat are needed in summer, and warm clothing and a windproof jacket are needed in Winter.
