REAF runs its own core research project based around measuring the effectiveness of its marine habitat enhancement program.
Today there is greater pressure on coastal marine resources from growing coastal populations, demand for aquacultural water space and growth in recreational fishing. Keeping data on fishing efforts will provide a sound basis to ensure sustainability of resources.
Like the commercial fishers Catch Effort Landing Return forms (CELR) and Customary record keeping, so to has REAF devised a similar Fishing Log system for recreational fishers use.
The goal is to establish a base line of data and track any changes occurring over time in respect of fishing effort, fishing results, fish condition, fish utilisation, costs of fishing and what effect seabed enhancement might have on these aspects of fishing.
Fishing Log forms are sent free on request. Contact REAF. REAF welcomes copies of all completed log forms to be sent in at the change of seasons.
REAF enters all data and reports back as part of its ongoing community contribution.
If you have a specific research project you would like to run then please contact us. REAF is able to build bio-enhancement modules to your specifications and deploy at locations of your choice within the Resource Consent area.
If doing something with your diving skills that benefits the environment is your thing then you are in the right place.
Visibility is often not great off Opotiki, particularly near the fine sand-mud sea bed, so experience working in low visibility conditions is essential.
REAF works closely in conjunction with two local dive outlets, SportsWorld Whakatane and SportsWorld Opotiki. Full Dive gear can be hired in Whakatane and tanks refilled at both SportsWorlds.
REAF can arrange for a suitably equipped Dive boat to take you to sites that are currently requiring attention.
Research findings help us to grow and furthers our understanding of the marine environment.
Contact REAF to discuss your plans or use our Booking Page.
