Testimonial

"Having done some research on sustainable fishing methods, visiting the Opotiki Community Reef site was incredibly interesting. It is an excellent example of what can be done to ensure that fish populations thrive in the future."
Alison M., Hampshire, UK

Reef Deployment

"Its the putting right that counts" L V Martin

The focus of REAF was initially to develop a system by which individual fishermen could build a reef in their own back yard (when it was too rough to go fishing) and deploy it from their own 5 to 6 m vessel without the use of divers.

This system has been successfully achieved and the resultant reefs built are proving stable and continue to be productive. Video and more is available on all that REAF has developed.

New options for cluster reef deployment with a larger boat are being investigated in 2012. This will enable pre arranging the reef modules on an untreated pallet, ready for deployment. The effectiveness of the reef should be greatly enhanced. Unified team work is called for on land and at sea.

Deployment of the reef modules offers room for creativity. Calm sea and low wind conditions are called for on deployment days. In Opotiki large high pressure systems often create ideal conditions. Waiting for windows of opportunity are important.

The suitable vessel REAF had its eye on has currently moved out of Opotiki and the search is on for an alternative in 2012.

REAF can issue you with a reef certificate that gives your reef's location either once it has been deployed or where it is pre planned to be deployed.

REAF will post more information as it becomes available.
