As part of a Government funded 'jobs creation summit' the Motu Trail cycleway is being being developed, many parts are now completed and very rideable.
The cycleway is also for walkers, in fact it is expected that just as many will walk it as cycle it.
The Motu Trails will offer various track options, from an easy off road 19km scenic sand dune section, ( a variation of this is to cycle 9.5 km on the cycle track and 9.5 km back along the beach at low tide ride), or 44km Pakihi track which starts past Toatoa and brings you back to Opotiki, or the 90.5 km loop trail that leaves from and returns to Opotiki, taking in the dunes section, half of the Motu road, the challenging Pakihi track with its numerous bridges, and back along the scenic and flat Otara Road into Opotiki.
You can see the official map and information on the Motu Trails web site at www.motutrails.co.nz (Open in a new tab so you won't loose this page)
