Testimonial

"Having done some research on sustainable fishing methods, visiting the Opotiki Community Reef site was incredibly interesting. It is an excellent example of what can be done to ensure that fish populations thrive in the future."

Tiaki Moana

Working with nature to grow more fish in the sea

In Maori mythology, the heroic legends of Maui are numerous. On one occasion he trapped te Ra (the Sun) with ropes and made the day longer by slowing the sun's progress across the sky.
This story can be interpreted as speaking to us of modifying the natural world, so long as it has beneficial outcomes for everyone.

Reef building on relatively barren areas of seabed has very positive benefits for both marine and our lives.
Many species of marine life require structure for attachment. Fish use reefs for navigation, breeding, sleeping, getting cleaned by smaller fish and obtaining a balanced diet.

The Opotiki reef concept is we think, quite unique, harnessing both physical and metaphysical means to help nature grow more fish.

Tiaki Moana is an hour long condensed guided tour where you are presented with the basics of reef building and discover how you can help restore marine environments to grow more fish in the sea.

Entry is by koha (donation). Phone beforehand to check on availability.

If you are a Tour Bus operator or want to ensure a guide is available at the time of your visit, please phone a few days ahead or email us to make a group booking.

Tiaki Moana presents a story that can help restore marine life and bring real wealth and health for the whole community.

From here you may well decide to take the longer Reef Building Workshop.
